Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot: A Beginner's Guide

Today, I want to chat about one of the most fascinating and influential tarot decks out there: the Thoth Tarot. It's not your average deck, and its story is as intriguing as the cards themselves.


The Thoth Tarot isn't just a deck of cards; it's a collaborative masterpiece born from the brilliant (and sometimes controversial!) mind of Aleister Crowley and the artistic talent of Lady Frieda Harris. Crowley, a prominent figure in occultism and ceremonial magic, envisioned a tarot deck that went beyond traditional symbolism. He wanted something that incorporated his extensive knowledge of Qabalah, astrology, and other esoteric systems.


The journey began in 1938. Crowley, already a seasoned tarot enthusiast and author of "The Book of Thoth," sought a partner to bring his vision to life. He found that partner in Lady Frieda Harris, a painter with a keen interest in geometric abstraction and a willingness to delve into Crowley's complex ideas.


Their collaboration was intense and demanding. Crowley provided detailed instructions and symbolic interpretations, while Harris translated them into vibrant and evocative imagery. She wasn't just painting pretty pictures; she was meticulously encoding layers of meaning into each card. This process was far from simple! They experimented with different color palettes, geometric forms, and symbolic representations, constantly refining and adjusting their approach.


The creation of the Thoth Tarot was more than just an artistic endeavor; it was a magical working. Crowley believed that the act of creating the deck would imbue it with power and spiritual significance. The process involved rituals, meditations, and a deep immersion in the esoteric principles that underpinned the design.


Sadly, the deck wasn't published until after both Crowley's and Harris's deaths. The first edition appeared in 1969, more than 20 years after Crowley's passing. Since then, the Thoth Tarot has become one of the most popular and respected tarot decks in the world, revered for its rich symbolism, stunning artwork, and profound insights.
